Recently I was on vacation on Martha’s Vineyard when mother nature decided to put a damper on our stay in Oaks Bluffs. The rain wasn’t going to get us down so we took the opportunity to head over to Vineyard Haven to peek in some shops and maybe even start on our holiday shopping. After poking in a few cute boutiques we found the aptly named ‘Rainy Day’ gift shop.

The Rainy Day gift shop is such a fun store with a gift for everyone and anyone (my husband, the science nerd, was very excited about the Periodic Table shower curtain). They have unique calenders, candles, books, kitchen utensils, crafts, home decor and more.

Among all the color and fun gift items is a perfectly placed display of Au Bags as well. It is nice when we are on the road to see how well the Au Products seamlessly fit in with each individual retailers shop design and layout. AU’s Sailwax Collection is the original oil cloth developed in Scotland for mariners as their foul weather gear. In the early 1800′s a Scottish mill that wove sails for the British clipper fleet used the material to make gear for the fisherman, especially their capes. They used the oil from flax plants. At its origin the material was heavy, stiff in the rain and faded to yellow over time – which is where the traditional yellow of the fisherman’s slicker came from.

Over time the Sailwax concept has been improved and refined. This wax infused cotton is great for those who want classic sophistication, durability and water resistance. Perfect for the sophisticated traveler. Unlike its ancestors, the color of the Sailwax collection doesn’t fade to yellow, but it does look better and better over time.

The 18% collection has been a great addition to our lines. 18% of each bag that we make at Au ends up as scrap. Some see this as just waste but we saw an opportunity. We took all of those “scraps” and made unique one-of-a-kind open totes, zipped totes and toiletry bags. The bags are colorful, fun and you never have to worry about someone having the same bag as you. Just think, not only are you making a stylish decision but an Earth friendly one as well.
